The City has issued a permit for the construction of a new $29 million school building for Walter L. Cohen College Prep.
The 104,659 square-foot building will have three stories and includes classrooms, science labs, media center, auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen, offices and support spaces.
The City selected Grace Hebert Curtis Architects for the project, the same firm that is designing the planned jail expansion.
The physical education section of the building includes an indoor basketball gym and a weight room.
Construction of the foundation has already been approved and is underway.
Green infrastructure has been incorporated into the plan, as required by City code. Permeable parking spaces and grassy swales will help reduce strain on the conventional drainage system.
The project is located in the Milan neighborhood, near St. Charles Avenue and Louisiana Avenue.
