NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced the start of its citywide AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program, including 10 current full-time members and 11 upcoming full-time members across 16 different departments and in the City Council District C. The City is also currently accepting applications for seven VISTA Summer Associates who serve a 10-week term to help prevent summer learning loss in the community.
Both programs have been awarded to the City by the National AmeriCorps program and provide the City with fulltime project work. According to the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS), a VISTA project generates on average $140,000 annually.
The AmeriCorps VISTA program is a federal program that connects individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation's most pressing challenges. VISTA members will assist the City in mobilizing community resources and increasing the capacity of each department to manage effective and sustainable projects addressing anti-poverty measures.
In the past, the City of New Orleans has had VISTA members serve with individual departments but has never had a City (Mayor's Office) led program with one cohort. Each of the members serve at least one full year with their respective departments and will carry out different goals based on each department's needs.
Implementing this program furthers the City's mission of increasing job opportunities in New Orleans as well as creating a culture of national service in our community. In addition to this year's program, the City plans to expand to more departments and partner organizations in the community as the program progresses.

The City will be advertising new full-time AmeriCorps VISTA positions in the summer of 2021.
